Volta Basketball Association elects Dr. Andre Kwesi-Kumah as regional chairman


The Volta Regional Basketball Association, VOBBA has yesterday, January 8, elected a new chairperson to stir the affairs of the association in Volta and Oti regions.

The position was left vacant following the resignation of same, Dr. Andre Kwesi-Kumah who contested the national presidential election but lost.

The association during their general meeting held at the Pleasure Gardens in Ho amongst other issues decided to engage all stakeholders and basketball team officials to map the way forward of the young association in the region. 

The chairman elect, Dr. Andre Kwesi- Kumah having been declared chairman of the region, expressed his gratitude for the confidence repose in him to lead the region in basketball. In his victory speech, he stressed on the need for all to come on board to help push Volta basketball to a  greater height.

In an interview with the newly elected chairman, Dr. Andre Kwesi-Kumah stated that, it is the priority of the region to train basketball referees to avoid importing referees from Accra and other areas before the start of the maiden regional league.

"The priority is to make sure we get our own referees so that we don't have to be bringing referees from Accra, so the number one priority is to get our own referees, get them well versed in the rules and regulations of basketball and then start our league."

Basketball as a sport in both Oti and Volta regions have not received the needed support from government. This as a result has seen a stagnant growth of basketball in the region. The chairman speaking with 24hoursssports.com described the lack of government support for the sport to thrive in the region as zero.

"Government support is zero. Everything is coming from our own resources, we don't know anything about government support, we only working hard to get our own funding to get us going."



Also, the national basketball president, Mr. Ato Van-Ess believe it is important to develop the sport by working together, this he said basketball administrators will be trained in the country to enable manage the association. The president describing the newly regional chairman as vibrant believes he will lead the executives to do a good job.

"We need to develop the sport by first of all working together. We want to start from the administration, we will make sure we have well trained administrators to manage the association, we will also focus on the technical and the officiating officials"

"Now we have a new chairman who is very vibrant and committed to the game, I believe he and his executives will help promote the game in Volta region".

The president also hinted on an upcoming regional basketball league from January to June as the idea is to have a national tournament in the not too distant future.

"There are activities in line, from January to June, there will be regional leagues before the national tournament, these are opportunities to work together to take the game to the next level" 

The Volta Regional basketball association is one of the youngest sporting association to have been inaugurated.
