Known as the Lions of Teranga, the Senegal national team was formed in the early 1960s. The team has appeared in the African most prestigious tournament (AFCON) 16 times with their first appearance in 1965.

Their best performances in the  Africa Cup of Nations, were runner-up to Cameroon in the 2002 edition in Mali, and to Algeria in the 2019 edition in Egypt. At the FIFA World Cup, Senegal was the second African country to reach the quarter final stage, (only Cameroon, 1st and Ghana 3rd have reached the quarter final of the World Cup). They beat France (2002 WC) who were the defending champions (1998 Champions) in the opening game.

After 16 years, Senegal appeared in the World Cup again but got eliminated in the group stages.

Senegal has thus become perennial underachievers in the African Cup of Nations. They lost 0-1 to Algeria in the 2019 AFCON final in Egypt.Henri Camara has the record of most capped player, 99 making him the all time goal scorer for Senegal with a total of 29 goals to his credit.
