Yaw Ansa-Asare living the dream as a sports photojournalist

Yaw Ansa-Asare, a photojournalist taking Africa and the world by storm, ranked 2nd in the AIPS photography Sport media awards


Sports photography has come to play a vital role in the sporting industry. It has added a lot of memories to the game, be it football, athletics, boxing, basket ball etc and with the excitements caught on camera, it has become more of joy and happiness for all followers of the game of sports.



Yaw Ansa-Asare, a sports photojournalist who defied all odds as an event photographer to become a sports photojournalist is now a household name in the sports industry having placed 2nd in the AIPS sport media awards in the boxing category.



Describing the feeling, Ansa-Asare believed it was great to be ranked 2nd in the continent having been recognized in 2019 among the many photojournalists who participated.



"The feeling was great to be honoured like this on the continent. In 2019, I was among the lots who participated, that urged me to do more, worked hard which paid off. With me being 2nd placed on the continent, I know I will go higher this year and fight for a position in the world stage"



In an exclusive interview with Yaw Ansa-Asare, he narrated to 24hourssports.com how it all started as an event photographer and how he fell in love shooting scintillating action pictures on all sporting events.



"The journey to becoming a sports photographer was not all easy. I started out as an event photographer but one day, I just decided to try something sports related and I loved the outcome."


Starting as a freelance, Yaw Ansa-Asare took to shooting handball and football games to test his skills and abilities to improve on his new found job.



"I started as a freelance, shooting of handball and football matches to test the skills and improve. As the days go by, I learnt from old pictures and watched some good sports photographers here in Ghana and international."



Speaking on what the future holds, Skef as he's also known in the media landscape, talks about hope of shooting action pictures during Afcon, World Cup tournaments, Olympic games, Uefa Champions League and also winning more awards from AIPS and other notable sports awards.


"I hope to bag in more awards from AIPS and other notable sports awards. I love to shoot an Afcon, world cup, Olympics games and UEFA champions league"




They say, "a journey of a 1000 mile begins with a step", that of Yaw Ansa-Asare, though the journey may seem far, having ranked 2nd in the boxing category of the AIPS sport media awards, the journey look shorter than the 1000 miles the adage says.
