2020/21 Ghana Premier League Set to Start in August |
Following the abrupt cancellation of the Ghana Premier League, the Ghana Football Association Executive Council in a meeting has come out with a date for the 2020/21 league season.
A statement on the official website indicates the Executive Council of the GFA took the decision on Tuesday July 14, 2020, after taking into consideration a number of factors in relation to the game and the safety protocols announced by government as well as the Association's continuous engagement with the Covid-19 Advisory Team.
The new league season will take different formats with the possibility of clubs playing behind closed doors to prevent the spread of coronavirus pandemic. Only four stadia (
Accra Sports Stadium, Cape Coast Stadium, Len Clay Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Sports Stadium) will be adopted as clubs are expected to be grouped into Southern and Northern zones respectively.
" The Executive Council also discussed the possibility of changing the format of the leagues following the effects of Covid-19 pandemic. The new season may be designed differently to ensure completion and one of the scenarios being considered is playing behind closed doors at carefully selected game centres" the statement said.
The new season which will be run as a project will be dubbed as Football Against Covid-19, a move to offer entertainment to Ghanaians while staying safe at home.
