C. k Akonnor, Black Stars head coach |
Black Stars coach, C. K Akonnor has denied he is under mounting pressure to hand in call-ups to local players plying their trade in the Ghana Premier League.
According to him, he places a lot of premium on players playing in the local league because that's the starting point to a successful career thus acknowledging the impact of the league on his career.
"I won't say pressure but of course the local based players are important, I am what i am because I stayed here and trained home, I can't ignore that”.
He further stressed that in the coming qualifiers he will give the local lads more opportunities with the national side.
"I am looking forward to get them involved, to come and believe that they can play and that will encourage them to work harder the extra mile to improve. They need to come and believe that they can do it” he told GTV Sportsplus.
A lot of former national coaches have had to endure a massive back lash from the local media landscape for handing limited opportunities to local based players.
Akonnor named his first squad as a national team coach for the double header against Sudan and Sao Tomme and Principe by giving four local lads an opportunity with the national setup but for the coronavirus outbreak, the qualifiers was put on hold for the time being.
